Best Cabinet Hinges – Buyer’s Guide

best cabinet hingesDo you have kids? Ever run across this scenario? You walk into the kitchen, and pretty much every cabinet door is sitting there wide open. You walk around and close them all, then twenty minutes later, find the same situation. This time, you call out and make the culprit that opened them go back and close them. After getting that patented teenage eye roll, the next sound you hear is artillery fire, and there is a rapid-fire closure of all the doors, banging, slamming, and otherwise making a racket.

Best Hinges for Cabinet Doors Reviews

1. Rev-A-Shelf LD-0220-50SC – Best Hinges for Rev-A-Shelf Tip-Out Tray

General impression

These hinges are designed specifically for a tip-out tray. This type of tray can be found most often around sinks, where it is not possible to put in a full-sized drawer, but there is a false-front panel in place. By having a tip-out panel, you can gain some extra storage in a convenient location. The hinges are available in both standard and soft-close varieties.

Best features

These hinges are usually purchased with a tip-out tray, which attaches to the inside of the panel. The panel is then hinged, and it will open at a full 50o angle, giving complete access to the contents. The hinges themselves have a stiffening rib, which provides extra stability and prevents side-to-side movement as the drawer is opened and closed. Made with a zinc finish, these hinges are a #5 Amazon best-seller.

PROS:
  • Highly rated overall, and for durability and value
  • Gives you additional storage in a normally unused area
CONS:
  • No instructions or installation templates supplies with the hinges

Conclusion

If you have false front panels around your bathroom or kitchen sinks, this is a great way to turn unused space into valuable storage. While it won’t help you with large items, it would be convenient for small kitchen tools, dental accessories such as floss and toothpaste, and so on. We recommended buying the trays available from the manufacturer along with the hinges to get a perfect fit and assembly.

2. T&B 175 Degree Hinges – Best Kitchen Cabinet Hinges

General impression

These soft-close hinges offer adjustability both side-to-side and up and down, making them suitable for any type of overlay cabinetry. They open a full 175o, making them ideal for kitchen cabinets, giving you full access to the contents, including lazy Susan cabinets. Note that these hinges are designed for frameless doors only; they will not work on inset doors (see buyer’s guide below for examples).

Best features

Invisible when installed, these wide-angle hinges offer soft-close functionality with virtually silent closure. The hinges have a copper core with a nickel-plated exterior. They are highly rated for durability, value, and ease of installation. They are a top 25 seller on Amazon.

PROS:
  • Multi-directional adjustments give you a perfect fit on existing cabinetry
  • 175o opening keeps doors well out of the way while working
CONS:
  • Some users felt installation instructions were not very specific or helpful

Conclusion

If your current kitchen or bathroom cabinets only open to a 90o angle, perpendicular to the frame, you’ll love that these 175o angle hinges lay almost flat. It gives you wider access to the contents of the cabinets, and they also work especially well in a corner Lazy Susan cabinet. Given their sales volume and positive reviews, these are definitely a top kitchen soft closure hinge.

3. Blum 38N355BE08 – Best Rated Cabinet Hinges

General impression

These hinges are designed for use in half- or full-overlay cabinets. They are compact but still offer good strength and durability. They come in a nickel-plated finish and are generally a drop-in replacement for other compact hinges. These are highly rated hinges, with over 500 individual reviews.

Best features

The soft-close feature on one hinge can be deactivated for small or lightweight doors, making for a smooth, quiet closure using the features of the other hinge. The hinge will not be damaged even if the door is slammed, and is adjustable. Note that for new installations, a special jig to cut the pockets for the cup is recommended. This would not be needed for the replacement of existing hinges.

PROS:
  • Very high overall ratings, plus additional high values for ease of installation, stability, and value
  • Adjustable closure rates based on size and weight of the door
CONS:
  • Sold both with and without screws; be sure to order accordingly

Conclusion

The ratings and reviews on this hinge give an excellent perspective on its use and adaptability. The adjustable closure strength will give you a quiet, smooth closure, whether on large or small cabinet doors. The 105o opening angle gives you full access to the cabinet contents. Five-hundred customers aren’t going to be wrong. This is a very highly rated closure hinge.

4. Probrico 105 – Best Soft Close Cabinet Hinges

General impression

Unlike the second set of hinges on our list, these hinges are designed specifically for a full-face frame cabinet. They have a full 105o opening angle, great for moving items in and out of the cabinet frequently. Probrico is a major manufacturer of all types of cabinet hardware. These hinges are fully concealed when installed and adjustable for a great fit.

Best features

A top 15 Amazon seller, these hinges offer great quality and come from a manufacturer who can also deliver complementary cabinet hardware to match. These hinges are designed for a full-frame cabinet (see buyer’s guide below) and will close smoothly and quietly for a long time. They have excellent ratings for value, sturdiness, and ease of installation.

  • Customers quite please about how well they fit as a replacement part

Other than a couple of mentions about the quality of the screws in the hinge kit, customers rave about these hinges. They are a good replacement alternative for full-framed cabinets, and many cite the almost drop-in installation when they are used as replacements. The wide opening angle makes them especially suitable for kitchen and larger cabinets, but their best feature is the overall quality and reputation.

8. Blum CLIP top – Best Hinges for Inset Cabinet Doors

General impression

Inset door cabinetry requires a special type of hinge to be installed. Please see the buyer’s guide below for an example of an inset cabinet. As with the other Blum hinges reviewed earlier, these are very highly rated, especially for sturdiness, installation ease, and overall value. These hinges are both self-closing and soft-closing. See below for further explanation.

Best features

By all accounts, these hinges operate smoothly when installed properly. Some drilling is necessary to place the cup properly, and specialty tools are available to help do this (sold separately). You can, however, do the installation with just a special drill bit, but a high level of accuracy is needed. With a 110o opening angle, you will have plenty of access to your storage space.

PROS:
  • Specifically designed for frameless or full inset design
  • High customer ratings, experienced manufacturer
CONS:
  • Cover plates shown in pictures are not included; must be ordered separately

Conclusion

For an inset cabinetry installation, this is an excellent hardware set. Self- and soft-closing, you will get excellent, durable performance. The hinges work well as replacement equipment, and, for new installations, we highly recommend the purchase of a concealed hinge drilling jig for accurate assembly.

9. Rok Hardware – Best Soft Close Damper for Cabinet Doors

General impression

We’ll be changing gears now, as this product is not a hinge, as the prior eight items were. The differences between self-closing and soft-closing are explained below, and this product enables you to make a self-closing cabinet door a soft-closing cabinet door without replacing the hinges. Note that this product will only work on cabinetry with invisible hinges; if you can see the hinges with the door closed, these dampers will not work for you.

Best features

Easily installed with just a screwdriver, this Amazon Choice product puts an end to slamming cabinet doors by slowly pulling them closed. The damper is adjustable to compensate for the weight of the door, and the zinc coating makes them blend well with most hinges.

PROS:
  • Simple, affordable way to modify your cabinets into soft-closing door cabinetry; adjustable closing speed
  • Two screw installation; very simple
CONS:
  • Unclear whether mounting screws are included; some customer reviews say not included

Conclusion

If you’re trying to sleep in the morning, and your partner is banging cabinet doors shut in the bathroom, then this product is for you. Eliminate slamming doors with a simple installation of this door damper without the need to purchase soft-closing hinges.

Buyer’s Guide

In the buyer’s guide will give you some additional information and insight into some of the key terms, features, and specifications for cabinetry hardware. This knowledge will help you make a more informed buying decision. In addition to the information provided here, we encourage you to visit the Amazon or manufacturer’s web site for further clarification as needed.

Soft-close vs. self-close hinges

Soft-close vs. self-close hinges

We’ve talked about both versions of hinges in the product reviews above, and here we can explain the difference between the two. Soft-close hinges are also self-close hinges, but not all self-close hinges are soft-close. Soft-close hinges use a damper to pull the cabinet door closed slowly. This should be almost silent as the door comes in contact with the frame. Self-closing hinges typically are spring-driven and will snap shut with a “thump” when the door and frame come into contact. Both will self-close; you get the choice of how quietly they do that.

Opening angle

Opening angle

The opening angle describes the measure between the frame of the cabinet and the cabinet door. A door that opens exactly perpendicular to the frame would have an opening angle of 90o. If the opening angle is greater than 90o, you get easier access to the contents of the cabinet, as the door is further removed from the frame, and not in your immediate way. Some of the opening angles here are as high as 175o, meaning the doors are almost parallel to the frame.

Cabinet type

Cabinet type

In the reviews above, we’ve noted that some of the hinges can only be used with specific designs of cabinets. Most were for invisible, interior mounting, while one model was for exterior mounting, where it could be seen. The diagram below shows the three most common types of cabinetry. The full overlay has the doors mounted on the outside of the cabinet, flush with the edges. The half-overlay has the doors slightly inset from the edge of the cabinet, rather than flush. The inset mount has a frame around the front to the cabinet, and the doors are inset into the inside of that frame. We highly recommend that you carefully evaluate the type of hinge required for your particular application to avoid the selection of an incompatible hinge to the cabinet construction.

cabinet door type

Hinge adjustments

Hinge adjustments

There are two types of hinge adjustments we will discuss here. The first is relevant when you are replacing old existing hinges with new ones. In a perfect world, the screw holes from the old hinge would align exactly with the screw holes from the new hinge; of course, that is not always the case. Some of the hinges here are designed to give you some level of adjustment, so you don’t have to start over with new holes for the hinge. These adjustments are usually in the form of a slightly longer and wider slot for the screws that hold the hinge in place. This will give you better odds of using the same screw holes as the old hinges. You can see the adjustable slots on this Lancher hinge reviewed earlier:

Latcher hinges

The second type of adjustment on a hinge is related to the self-closing speed. Many of these hinges allow you to adjust and control closing speeds, which will vary based on the size and weight of the door. Most of these adjustments are made quite simply by adjusting a screw on the hinge, which changes the hydraulics release to make it faster or slower. You can see an example of the adjustment on this Rok damper:

Soft Close Damper for Cabinet Doors

Hinge installation

Hinge installation

The installation requirements will vary for many of these hinges. These variations can be caused by the actual design of the hinge, or by the combination of cabinet type and hinge. Installation may be as simple as driving in a few screws, or as complex as using a special jig to drill out a pocket for the cup of a fully-recessed hinge. In all cases, you should look for complete instructions on the manufacturer’s web site, YouTube, or other Internet sites.

Conclusion

Cabinet hinges may not be the sexiest topic to read about, but a well-designed and functional cabinet hinge can help erase some of those small annoyances in your life. We’ve reviewed and discussed several different types and models of cabinet hinges here, and also gave you information on a closing damper and magnetic closures for cabinet doors. Some of these hinges are visible and can be part of well-accessorized room décor. Others are invisible, yet provide a self-closing and/or soft-closing feature so you don’t see open doors, or hear slamming ones.

Whether you are looking for hinges for ne construction or replacing old, existing ones, we’ve given you some “top choice” hinges for virtually any application. We hope this review will be helpful for you in evaluating the type and style of hinge you want, and to make a good purchasing decision.
