1. Delta Children Wood Toddler Bed – Best Wooden Transitional Kids Bed
As your child continues to grow, it is only a matter of time before they are too big to sleep in a crib – whether because their bodies have outgrown it or because they have simply developed into too precocious of children. At this point, your child may not actually be developed enough and ready to transition to a full sized bed. This is when you should consider a transitional bed for those toddler years where they are still developing.
By far one of the best qualities about this kids bed is that it does not require too terribly much effort on your part. For instance, this is by far one of the easier kids beds to assemble, and you can feel confident that your child is not only adjusting to their new sleeping arrangement but do not have to worry about accidentally injuring themselves. On top of that, this transitional bed was designed to be used without supports, so you do not have to worry about a maximum weight capacity.
2. Delta Children Plastic Toddler Bed – Best Price Budget Kids Bed
Not everyone has the money to simply purchase their children the most expensive products within a market – especially when those products are sizable investments that are not even meant to last all that long. This is especially true for things like furniture which are normally expected to be used for years on end without showing signs of aware – assuming they were properly maintained. That is why the Delta Children plastic toddler bed is a breath of fresh air, providing value for a transitional stage without breaking the bank.
Out of all the kids beds on our list, the Delta Children Plastic is by far the least expensive that we reviewed. That said, do not let the name or the low price mislead you as this kids bed is more than capable of standing up next to other transitional beds. This is due in a large part because the plastic is reserved for the panels of this bed, while the frame itself is made of steel. Though it is only a transitional bed, the Delta Children Plastic still provides a reasonable maximum weight capacity of 50 pounds and is far easier to assemble than some of the other kids beds we reviewed.
3. Delta Children Canopy Toddler Bed – Best Girl Kids Bed
Delta Children appear numerous times on our list, and that has a lot to do with the fact that the company is not merely satisfied with producing a series of capable kids beds. Instead, Delta Children makes it a point to cover as many different niches as possible – and also ensures that your child can have the freedom to develop at their own rate without having to worry about unexpected hurdles potentially posing as a legitimate risk to their safety. That said, Delta Children also wants to make sure that your children are happy and satisfied with their beds as well.
It should be understood that the Delta Children Canopy is definitely somewhat of a gendered bed in that it does not come in any other styles. Unless your boy is a fan of Minnie Mouse and a traditionally “feminine” color scheme, chances are he will be less than thrilled about the Delta Children Canopy kids bed. Still, if you do have a little girl, she will likely appreciate the added touches of a small canopy decorating her toddler transitional bed – though be sure to stress that the canopy is not for play as it will not last long in that scenario.
4. Delta Children Turbo Race Car Twin Bed – Best All-Around Value Kids Bed
There are certain products which have been so popular and maintained their prominence for so long that they become ingrained in the cultural consciousness. For instance, the classic red outdoor grill or a white picket fence have become nearly synonymous with a successful and happy life that it is considered nigh-necessary components of the American Dream. Though it may not be the original maker, Delta Children seeks to continue a similarly long tradition by manufacturing a race car bed for kids that actually presents a great all-around value for those looking for a bed that can transition well.
While it is not strictly the least expensive kids bed that we reviewed, the Delta Children Turbo does present with plenty of value. For one, this is a transitional bed that is designed to be used by toddlers while they learn how to sleep in a bed after a crib. That said, because the Delta Children Turbo does not use supports or slats to hold the mattress up, you do not have to worry as much about a maximum weight capacity. As such, you can use this bed long after your toddler has grown into a far more autonomous child.
5. DONCO Kids 760-W Low Study Loft Bed – Best Study Kids Bed
DONCO Kids is one of the big hitters in the kids bed market, and a quick look at the DONCO Kids 760-W is all it takes to figure out why. While this kids bed will not be ideal for everyone, it is by far one of the better offerings within its niche that we have seen which is a true sign of product mastery since virtually everyone can produce a usable version of a standard product. As such, the DONCO Kids 760-W highlights the kind of attention to detail you should demand from your kids bed’s manufacturer.
When you first look at the DONCO Kids 760-W, there is a good chance that you will not necessarily piece together its full value. This is because, for most intents and purposes, the DONCO Kids 760-W looks like any other loft bed that has been hybridized with a storage type of bed. That said, the DONCO Kids 760-W actually boasts a surprise that, while not necessarily the most exciting thing to a child, makes it by far one of the most versatile and convenient kid beds that we reviewed. Some of the drawer storage space of the DONCO Kids 760-W actually pulls out on wheels and can be used as a desk.
6. Delta Children Canton Toddler Bed – Best Transitional Kids Bed
If nothing is too good for your child – no matter the cost – then you are very likely wondering what to do about that time of development situated between being too big for a crib but not quite being big enough for a full-sized bed. In this instance, some parents seek out an alternative that provides the general experience of an adolescent’s bed but with a number of different design features intended to appeal to children who are toddlers and still developing their gross motor skills.
The Delta Children Canton may look like a standard platform bed, but there are a number of subtle features which actually position this kids bed as a transitional bed. For instance, the Delta Children Canton features two prominent quarter guardrails on either side of the bed at the head. Keep in mind, the purpose of these quarter guardrails is not to keep your child safely in their bed but to afford helpful handholds to assist them in getting out of bed. Another transitional feature is how low to the ground the bed is set. Though the maximum weight capacity is only 50 pounds, it is still made out of solid wood for plenty of durability.
7. DONCO Kids 750TE Series Bed – Best Loft Kids Bed
Not everyone is looking for a kids bed that comes with every bell and whistle, but that does not mean you need to go for the most straight-laced and standard bed available. There are still plenty of kids beds out there that offer one or two design features which will provide value no matter how old they are. For instance, the DONCO Kids 750TE may seem to be a standard play bed, but it actually demonstrates more value as a standard loft bed.
One thing to remember when buying a kids loft bed is that you are not necessarily purchasing this bed for today as much as you are for tomorrow. In this regard, a loft bed is only as valuable as its ability to function well after your child has reached adolescence, otherwise its window of use dwindles smaller than that of a transitional bed. Thankfully, the DONCO Kids 750TE actually has a modular design that allows you to set up the bed in a number of different arrangements – including the removal of the slide and ladder altogether as well as the ability to select on which side of the bed those different features are installed.
8. Broyhill Kids Marco Island Captain’s Bed – Best Performing Kids Bed
Not all of the best kids beds need to be designed for a specific niche or to accomplish some subset of tasks – sometimes, a bed does not need to be too terribly much more than a simple bed. That said, even a simple bed can sport some additional features to make it more enticing than some of the others. Regardless, the Broyhill Kids Marco Island Captain’s Bed provides everything you need out of a kids bed that will last for years as well as a couple additional features to sweeten the pot.
By far the nicest quality about the Broyhill Kids Marco Island Captain’s Bed is the fact that it can sleep like a normal bed during normal situations but it can just as easily transform in an instant when extenuating circumstances arise. For instance, while this may ultimately be a standard bed – which is ideal for your child’s development – this bed also comes with a trundle mattress and drawers for storage, though the trundle mattress actually sits atop the drawers so your guest is not at floor level. Ultimately, there are few beds that we saw that are as complete of a package as the Broyhill Kids Marco Island Captain’s Bed.
9. Donco Kids 501747 Twin Over Full Bunk Bed – Best Trundle Bunk Bed for Kids
If you have a growing family, then chances are that you need as much sleeping spaces as you can find. If that is the case, then you will more likely than not be far more interested in a bunk bed which will provide two places to sleep in the space of one. For this set of bunk beds particularly, you also have the advantage of the bunk beds being a twin and full size, so you do not have to worry about your children growing out of the beds anytime soon.
The Donco Kids 501747 has a couple advantages regarding its type beyond the fact that it is a kids bunk bed. On top of that, this kids bunk bed also has a trundle mattress as well providing you additional sleeping space in case you or your children have a guest sleepover. The trundle mattress is affixed to the frame on a set of wheels, so pulling it out and putting it back up will take no effort at all. To make things even better, all of the different sleeping areas are rated to hold occupants well below the expected weight limits of the different mattresses.
10. Coaster Home Furnishings Twin Loft Bunk Bed – Best Kids Play Bed
Coaster Home Furnishings has made our list a couple times, but if you want to get your kid the bed that was most designed for them, there are few beds on the market more geared towards providing your child with their best experience possible while simultaneously ensuring that they develop at the proper rate. That said, it is important to note that this bed is not intended to be used by a toddler as it could pose a risk. Regardless, the twin size mattress does provide plenty of space for this loft bed to be used well after you take down the slide.
By far one of the best qualities about the Coaster Home Furnishings loft bed is that it makes use of hybridization to provide more versatility and save space – two things of which it does exceptionally well. The loft type of the Coaster Home Furnishings offers a wealth of additional space for your child to use while simultaneously saving even more space – though some of that saved space is then sacrificed for the second type of bed this is: a play bed. On top of having a slide to along with the loft type, the Coaster Home Furnishings loft bed also comes with a woven PVC cover to turn the space under the mattress into a private space for your child.
While the materials and other features are incredibly important when judging the longevity of a kid’s bed, generally the child in question is far more interested in the type of bed it is as opposed to its build quality. In fairness, if you were to ever judge a purchase like that, this is a reasonable time to do so. That is because kids beds almost inherently have a built-in timer until it is either an unused piece of furniture taking up space or passed on to other people who can still get some use out of it.
This is often considered the “standard” type of bed as it is one of the more common as well as appropriate for sleepers of all ages. In fact, this is one of the most common bed types for adults – though those bed types do have far subtler differences than the types of kids beds. If your child sleeps in a platform bed, you can feel confident that you have done your job as a parent and that your child has successfully transitioned to an adult style of bed. While this is the least extravagant of the different types of kids beds, it is also often the most stable. Essentially, a platform bed does not have many moving pieces to otherwise damage and is often intended to be used either indefinitely or with potential in mind. It is also important to note that because of their most basic design features, it is actually fairly easy to hybridize this type of bed – especially if you have any intentions of putting anything underneath the bed.
As the name suggests, the bed itself is meant to inspire play in your child – whether that is due to the design of the bed or due to the style, a play bed is inherently meant to either bed used during play or be centered around it in some way. This type of bed also often happens to be a toddler’s transitional bed specifically to foster a desire to stay in the bed at night. For some, a play bed will actually incorporate elements into its design that are meant to be played with. Most commonly this involves a slide of some sort, but some of the more impressive play beds will actually use other bed types as features for their own model. If the bed does not actually have implements of play as part of its very design, then it will most likely be themed around a specific item, character, or concept.
The bunk bed is one of the more common types of kids beds available on the market for a few reasons. That said, by far the biggest draw of the bunk bed is the fact that it can accommodate two sleepers in the same amount of space that it takes to hold one. This is accomplished by a vertical alignment of the beds, though some bunk beds will even use a caddy corner kind of arrangement. Even better, the bunk bed can often be hybridized with some of the other types of bed on our list which provides far greater versatility than either the bunk bed or the other type on their own. One thing to keep in mind about bunk beds is that due to the height of the second bunk, it is not advised to use bunk beds until a child has gotten around the ages of 5 or 6. Before that and the child is simply too much of a risk to their selves to justify the use of bunk beds.
When one thinks of a loft bed, generally they think of a student or college or a young adult who just recently graduated from one. That said, there are actually quite a number of different subtle variations of loft beds that there are quite a few kids models. In fact, loft beds are so plentiful in part because it is so easy to hybridize them with other beds to provide your child with some versatility – which can be used for either work or play. Without addition, loft beds are still special for children, because they provide a large, open space underneath the beds itself to play. This has led to manufacturers taking a bit more of a direct role in appealing to children by adding things like slides and themed covers to the open area underneath a loft. Still, the space underneath a loft needs not be used for play as desks or storage options are also available.
Trundle beds are not truly their own type in as much as they are an addition or accessory to other types of beds. That said, trundle beds still have a tendency of being especially appreciated due to the fact that they provide an additional sleeping space. Essentially, a trundle bed will have a mattress that is stored underneath the bed when not in use and easily rolled out when you need additional space for guests. One of the great things about trundle types of beds is that they can be added to most other types of beds. While they are a bit uncommon on play beds – which are intended to be a bit more temporary – and essentially make a bottom bunk if applied to a loft bed, trundles are quite common and popular additions for both a standard and bunk type of bed.
This is another type of bed that is not truly its own type of bed but is instead actually an addition that is hybridized with another type of bed. Still, storage beds are by far some of the most useful and versatile beds available, often coming with a number of different features that are unique to them. Another great quality about storage beds is that they are common for all bed types and all ages, making the transition from a kids bed to an adult bed an easier one. The storage provided can take a couple of different forms including drawers and shelves which themselves can be open or more closed-off. These storage spaces can be built directly into the bed frame itself or it can be spaces designed specifically for storage. On top of that, the storage itself can also be used in other contexts – like as a desk or other organizing surface – which only increases the versatility of the bed.
As we can see, there are simply far too many conditions in which you or your child are better served by one option or another for there to be a single best kids bed. Instead, there are plenty of kids beds that are the best for their individual niche, though there are a couple of kids beds that simply stand out in more situations than others.
If you have a single child living at home and are simply looking for the most versatile and highest quality kids bed available, we recommend the Broyhill Kids Marco Island Captain’s Bed. Despite the name, the bed is gender neutral and comes with a load of great qualities and features, though arguably some of the most useful and convenient are the trundle mattress and drawer storage underneath the frame.
Of course, if you have multiple children living at home or always seem to find yourself hosting a sleepover, then it might be a better idea to eschew some of that storage space and opt instead to focus on providing more sleeping area. If you do need more sleeping space than a single mattress can provide, we recommend the Donco Kids 501747. Aside from the fact that this bed also includes a trundle mattress to sleep 3 or more, this is also a twin over full to potentially sleep an older and a younger sibling comfortably.
