1. Timber Ridge Zero Gravity – Best All-Around Chair
If you want a sturdy and functional reclining chair for outdoor use, the Zero Gravity might be one of the best options out there. This is a steel framed lounge chair with polyester padded foam upholstery and a wooden armrest. The chair is available in three sober color options, blue, camo, and earth pattern.
Comfort and durability are the highlights of this chair from Timber Ridge. The steel and polyester build quality is top notch, and the chair is rock solid with a max weight capacity of 350lbs. We really liked the adjustable settings, as it allows you to use this as a regular chair, or use it as a fully reclining long chair.
The ergonomics are spot on, thanks to the gently curved lines on this chair. This is especially apparent in the reclined mode, where the knees are slightly raised above your back and legs to offer superior lumbar support. For the head and neck, there is a comfortable removable pillow to provide some extra padding.
We also loved the curves on the wooden armrest. Situated below that armrest is a cupholder, which provides an added layer of convenience. You can even remove the armrest if you are so inclined, which is a nice touch. At the whole thing weighs just 24.6lbs, you can also take this chair along for a day at the beach or a camping trip in the woods.
Though it is designed as an outdoor chair, you will need to be careful how long you leave this chair out in the sun. The parts tend to degrade pretty quickly, so you will have to take extra care with this chair. If you want it to keep looking newish, it will have to be stowed away after use.
You might have to use extra cushioning, as the polyester upholstery is not the most comfortable option out there. The upright position of the chair is also not very comfortable, though the reclined setting more than makes up for this.
Despite a few noticeable flaws, the Timber Ridge lounge chair is still our firm favorite out of all the chairs we tried out. It offers excellent value for money and is an attractive option for your patio or poolside use. If you can suffer the extra care and maintenance required, this chair will keep you happy for a long time.
2. Christopher Knight Home 296394 Lakeport – Best Outdoor Wicker Chaise Lounge
The Lakeport from Christopher Knight Home is one of the only wicker-based lounge chairs on our shortlist. These are tan-colored wicker lounges, with cushions available in a wide range of colors (the navy and grey versions look the best). These are available in single, twin, and sets of two and four configurations.
The tan wicker chairs look very elegant and classy next to a backyard pool. The style this chair adds to your outdoor/patio decor is one of its strongest points. On top of that, they also offer outstanding comfort when fully reclined. Their large size is another great feature. If you want these to hold more than one person, they also come in twin size.
They go almost flat and have a softly contoured shape that offers enough support to your neck, back, and joints. The length of these chairs also makes them perfect for even tall folks who exceed 6’4” in height. And as these chairs come pre-assembled, you don’t have to go through any hassles of putting them together before use.
Rusting is a major concern with the metal bolts and joints inside this wicker chair. They should have used stainless steel fittings to avoid this issue. While the wicker material holds up rather well in the outdoor weather, the cushions cant handle it, which is a shame. The overall durability of these chairs suffers as a result.
These Christopher Knight lounge chairs have some significant durability concerns. If you want lounge chairs you can leave out in the sun and rain, these are definitely not the ones for you. But if you are willing to give them the kid-gloved treatment, they can definitely be considered as a stylish addition to your poolside decor.
3. Best Choice Products SKY1829 – Best Hanging Chaise Lounge With Canopy
This is a hanging lounge chair designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The chair is suspended from a curved stand and has a metal and PVC polyester construction. The frame is capable of supporting up to 265lbs. The chair is available in three-cushion colors: orange, lime green, and teal.
Innovative is one word you can use to describe the design employed in this chair. And we mean that in a good way. The curved stand reminds you of the stands which are used to support a globe. And we also like the way the chair nestles into that curve. The addition of a canopy umbrella on top is a nice touch, handy if you plan to keep this chair outdoors.
The lounging position on this chair is quite comfortable and relaxing, ideal for reading and similar stuff more than for napping. The gentle rocking motion you get from this chair is delightful indeed. If you want some protection from the sun, the large canopy umbrella provides enough shade.
Rusting is a significant issue for this chair, despite it having a powder-coated metal frame. Be prepared for regular coatings on Rustoleum on the metal bits if you plan to keep this chair outdoors. The cushions also lose their color and shine pretty fast if left out in the sun. The chair requires assembly once delivered but does not come with adequate instructions, which can be bothersome for some users.
If you want a hanging lounge chair, this Best Choice Products chair is undoubtedly worth a look. You will have to live with the rusting issue and the lack of a full flat recline mode. But the gentle rocking motion more than compensates for the lack of that feature. The addition of a canopy adds some value as well. Hanging chairs are not for everyone, so buy if you like that type of lounging option.
4. Sundale Zero Gravity Orbital Rocking Chair – Best Cheap Lounge For Outdoor Use
This is a solid looking rocking chair on rails from Sundale Outdoor. It has a minimalistic design, with an aluminum frame and plain Textilene fabric material for support. The fabric is available in several different colors, like red, blue, and grey. The sitting position is very relaxed, though you cannot fully recline with this chair. It can be used on a patio or even indoors. Max weight capacity of this chair is around 250lbs.
These Sundale chairs caught out eye due to their robust build quality. The frame is made of brushed aluminum, while the fabric is made from outdoor quality PVC mesh. The rails do an excellent job of delivering a smooth rocking action, and the guard is ideally positioned to prevent the chair from rocking too far back.
Comfort levels are pretty decent, and you do get a lot of support due to the positioning of a foam pillow at the back. The style of this chair is a mix of traditional and modern, and it does manage to look quite fetching on a patio. It is big enough to support taller people as well.
They claim that this is a zero gravity chair, but that is not really true. During the rocking motion, you may approach something close to the said posture, but that is not maintained for any significant period. Besides, the chair also lacks any locking mechanism, which is disappointing. While build quality is satisfactory, overall durability is indeed not up to the mark. You can expect it to rust and fade real soon.
The lack of a full recline mode on this one might be a big miss for many users looking to buy a lounge chair. But if that is not a significant concern for you, this rocking chair might be worth buying. The rocking action is very smooth and relaxing, and overall fit and finish levels are quite good.
5. Kozyard Folding Adjustable Chaise Lounge – Best Outdoor Folding Aluminum Chaise Lounge
The Kozyard chaise lounge is designed primarily for outdoor use. This folding chair can be bought bare, or along with colored cushions. It is made of a combination of aluminum frame and textilene fabric cover. At 13.2lbs it is incredibly lightweight and has a maximum weight capacity of 260lbs.
Easy storage and portability are the two main advantages of the Cozy chaise lounge from Kozyard. At 13.2 lbs, it is one of the lightest products in our list. And thanks to its folding design, it can be stored away in a compact form. The design is very slim and minimalist, with a shiny aluminum frame and simple grey textilene fabric. The combination looks quite pleasant out in the sunlight.
The adjustable back and folding legs allow you to get to the ideal posture for your aching body. The contoured shape adds to the overall comfortable ergonomics of this chair. And due to the lack of any cushions or padding, this chair is also very easy to clean.
Though these chairs are very affordable; they somewhat lack in the quality control department. The fit an finish levels could do with some improvement as a result. You cannot get an entirely flat reclined position with this chair, so you can only lie on your back on this chair. And it feels a bit too small for individuals who measure closer to the six-foot mark in height.
If you are on the shorter side, you will probably be able to get your money’s worth from this chair. It is not a bad option if you want something that you can move around your patio or backyard in the summer months.
6. Coaster Home Furnishings 550076 Dilleston – Best Indoor Vinyl Chaise Lounge For Back
Available in brown, white and grey colored faux leather finish options, these are very luxurious looking chaise lounges from Coaster Home. They are large enough to accommodate one adult (or two kids) and come with a pair of pillows (lumbar and regular size). The frame is made from dried hardwood, and the insides are filled with foam and a spring base.
Despite having vinyl upholstery, this chaise lounge manages to look quite luxurious and plush. The faux leather seems quite premium, especially in the rich brown color. The combination of springs and high-density foam deliver enough comfort and support for your back. The inclusion of a headrest and lumbar pillow further enhances the comfort levels of this lounge chair.
This could be a great addition to your living room decor. The hardwood frame is very durable, and the chaise lounge feels rock solid. Overall, this is a clean looking chaise lounge with a very chic, modern styling.
Vinyl upholstery can feel clammy and uncomfortable at times. You will have to use a throw or some other fabric covering to improve the comfort levels. The chair legs are chrome and have sharp edges. This is a design flaw that they need to address. The stitching on the upholstery is also not of a good enough quality.
Overall, you get what you pay for here. The chaise lounge has excellent padding and looks quite chic as well. As long as you use some extra coverage for the faux leather, you should find this a very comfortable lounge chair for your living room.
7. Giantex Folding Lazy Sofa Chair Stylish Couch Bed – Best Indoor Chair With Adjustable & Folding Frame
This Giantex folding lounge chair is ideal for indoor use. It has a faux velvet upholstery on the outside, with a steel frame and heavy sponge padding inside. The chair is available in three shades: beige, burgundy and Coffee brown. This chair comes fully assembled and has five different adjustable posture settings.
The extra thick padding on this lazy chair is its main highlight. This is a very plush and comfortable lounge chair, perfect for watching TV, playing games, reading, or naps. The five adjustable settings are located at different parts of the chair. This is a neat feature that allows you to customize the posture of the chair to suit your preferences.
The faux suede cover is also quite soft to touch. Unlike vinyl, this does not feel very uncomfortable on your skin. The steel frame inside makes this chair very sturdy indeed. The inclusion of a free pillow along with chair is a nice touch as well.
The dimensions of the chair are a bit on the smaller side. It is rather narrow and bit too short for people who are six feet or over. The controls for adjusting the posture of on this chair air also quite awkward and difficult to use. In the upright positions, you might have to prop the chair to walls to prevent it from toppling.
The Giantex Folding chair is an excellent choice for children, young adults, and folks under 6 feet. If you belong to the above categories and are in the market for a plush folding lounge chair at an affordable price, this is well worth a buy.
8. GDF Studio Rafaela Living Room Chaise Lounge – Best Indoor Lounge Chair With Classic Design
The Rafaela is a premium looking chaise lounge made from plywood, foam, and soft velvet. The indoor lounge chair has a very traditional design and comes in three colors: grey, garnet, and teal. You get a pillow with this chair. It has no adjustable features, and you will have to install the legs yourself.
The Rafaela looks absolutely gorgeous. With its rich antique design, it is hands down one of finest looking lounge chairs on this list. The velvet is incredibly soft and looks very attractive, regardless of the color you pick. The padding is not the thickest, but it does provide enough comfort. The legs look very premium as well, made from dark brown birch wood.
Since this lounge chair lacks any adjustable feature; you are stuck with the default seating position. While the backrest and pillow do make it comfortable, you cannot lie down flat on this lounge chair. At around 4.5 feet, it is too short for most adults, unless you use an ottoman or a futon. Some folks may be disappointed by the lack of extra padding or springs.
The Rafaela is better suited for shorter and smaller individuals. It looks gorgeous and will surely add some class to any indoor decor arrangement. If you feel you will be comfortable with its petite dimensions, this lounge chair is definitely worth a buy.
9. Kettler Roma Folding Lounger – Most Durable Outdoor Chair With Wheels
The Roma is a very durable looking outdoor lounge chair ideal for use on the beach or poolside. Crafted from durable plastic resin, this white chair comes with German build quality. You can fold it up for secure storage. The chair also has wheels for mobility.
The Kettler Roma gets four different reclining positions. The safety latch system on this chair deserves special praise. Though it may not win any awards for its looks, the Roma is a convenient and functional piece of furniture. Thanks to the larger wheels, it is also effortless to move around.
As this is an entirely plastic chair, you will not find any plushness or comfort here. It doesn’t have any cushions, and you will have to add your own to get the most out of it.
The Roma is an outdoor lounge chair that actually lives up to its billing. Most of the other chairs fail miserably in the durability contest. But thanks to the resin construction, this chair can withstand the elements better. It is light, portable and reliable, with a right mix of seating positions on offer.
10. Modway EEI-739-BEI-SET Encase Swing – Best Wicker Swing Chair For Reading
This egg-shaped swing lounge chair is equally at home inside your home as well as outdoors. It has a curved steel stand, and a woven rattan finish. The weave is made from synthetic materials. And there is a cushion inside, available in a wide range of shades.
The Encase has a very chic organic design, all curves, and natural looking bits. This chair is primarily for sitting in, but it works best when you curl up inside with your favorite book or drink. The build quality, fit and finish levels are all top-notch for this product. It is easy to setup and install as well.
The stand is a combination of aluminum and steel. So there is a chance of rust settling in if you plan to keep it outdoors. The chair is not very large and cannot safely accommodate tall and heavy individuals. The swing action also produces the odd creaking noise, which can be irritating.
Overall, the Encase is an elegant swing chair with a very contemporary design. If you are small enough to fit into it, this chair could give you a lot of joy. If you want a lounge chair to lie down though, this is definitely not it.
Buyers Guide and FAQ
What is a lounge chair/chaise lounge?
A lounge chair is a hybrid of a daybed and a chair. With a long body, canted backrest, and armrests, the lounge chair is a great place to nap. It can be used indoors in your living room or bedroom to create a cozy living space.
Outdoors near the pool or on the patio, chaise lounges offer a great way to get some sun tan in the summer. These chairs offer an alluring mix of luxurious comfort, elegance, and style.
Is it ‘chaise lounge’ or ‘chaise longue’?
The original piece of furniture was of French origin, called “chaise longue.” It means “long chair.” (chaise = chair, and longue = long in French)
But when English speakers started using the term, they mistakenly started calling it chaise lounge, because lounging is what you do in these chairs!
But with the passage of time, chaise lounge has become an established name for these lounge chairs here in the US. Out there in Europe, they might get confused if you use this term though!
Chaise Lounge Styles
The fantastic thing about lounge chairs is that they are available in a bewildering array of styles, ranging from traditional to modern, and everything in between. It is not hard to find a lounge chair to match any conceivable indoor decor.
You can find comfy, cushioned versions that work like a couch indoors. For those who need something less plush, flatter bench-style chairs are also available. The traditional French style has elegant flowing lines, with an asymmetrical backrest.
A gently contoured design is the highlight of these chairs. Besides looking really elegant, these contours also provide excellent head, neck and lumbar support. Some chairs have a design that slightly elevates your knees for better lower back support.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Lounge Chairs
It is quite easy to distinguish between chairs designed for indoor and outdoor use. Indoor chaise lounges often have a very plush and decadent feel, with thick foam cushioning, and velvet or leather upholstery.
Outdoor lounge chairs are decidedly skinnier, as heavy upholstery will not survive for too long in the sun and rains. While the indoor variants resemble couches, outdoor chairs veer closer to the daybed variety of outdoor furniture.
Choice of Materials
When it comes to the frame of a lounge chair, you have several options, including metal, wood, plastics, wicker, and resin.
In metal, aluminum and steel are prevalent options. These are equally at home indoors as well as outdoors. Wood is a more premium choice and will require more maintenance, especially in outdoor chairs.
Plastics and resin are available at the lower end of the price range, and offer advantages regarding weight and mobility as well.
Talking about mobility, you might want to check out outdoor lounge chairs with caster wheels. They are much easier to move into shade during inclement weather conditions.
Lounge chairs are a mixed breed, available in all sizes, shapes, and designs. Despite their diversity, they all offer a very relaxed seating posture. Chairs with thick padding and luxurious upholstery are best for indoor use. Outdoor chairs for your patio or poolside tend to have a more minimalist look, with metal/plastic frames and PVC fabrics. Swing chairs and rock chairs are also part of this category and offer a different experience altogether.
